The Sand Pump Project for the Turgwe Hippos' Pool

The mopane fence corridor seen from above on the river bank. The pool is to the right of this corridor.

Here, the workers put sacks filled with sand at the foot of each mopane tree pole. The new sand on the bank is from digging which was done by hand.

The sand pump, weighing a hefty 3 tons, is loaded off here. You can see Karen's husband Jean to the right.

The sand pump is lifted.

This is a view of the pool from downstream, going over the weir. You can see the water is ankle-deep at this point.
The suction part of the machine is very heavy!
